Nelson Mandela Bay officials have launched a major street-lighting repair program along the M17 Road. The work began on 19 November 2025 under the Electricity and Power Directorate. Teams are rewiring damaged lighting to improve night visibility and strengthen public safety.
What Happened?
MMC for Electricity and Power Councilor Ziyanda Mnqokoyi joined ministry officials and contracted streetcar drivers to start the first phase of the repairs.
The team focused on disconnecting damaged wiring and installing new cables along the route.
The upgrade aims to deliver consistent lighting at night, reduce the risk of robberies, and help motorists navigate the busy corridor with ease.
The M17 forms a key link for commuting residents, making the repair project a priority for the metro.
Official Response
Councilor Mnqokoyi said the repairs form part of the Municipality’s broader public-safety plan.
She urged residents to protect infrastructure and report cable theft or vandalism to Metro Police or SAPS.
“We need communities to stand with us,” she said. “Protecting these lights protects every resident who uses this road.”
Officials said additional repair phases will follow as teams work through the full corridor.
Community Impact
Residents who use the M17 daily have welcomed the repairs. Safer lighting is expected to help reduce night time incidents and improve the confidence of pedestrians who walk the route.
Local business owners say improved visibility may also deter opportunistic crime near shops and taxi stops.
In addition, motorists expect smoother travel in low-light conditions.
