CAF Fines Pirates R430k After Lupopo Clash

CAF has fined Orlando Pirates R430,000 on 19 November 2025 for two disciplinary breaches during their Champions League match against FC Saint Eloi Lupopo. The ruling follows last month’s second-leg clash at Orlando Stadium, where Pirates were knocked out on penalties after a 3–3 aggregate draw. CAF also rejected the club’s appeal to be reinstated in the competition.

CAF handed Pirates a R430 0000 fine for offences committed during the dramatic preliminary round return leg in Soweto.
The biggest penalty — R344 000— was issued for the use of chemical products near the visiting team’s locker room.
CAF ruled that the substance posed a potential risk to the health and safety of players and officials.

Lupopo had accused Pirates of spraying a toxic substance close to their dressing room, a claim CAF said was supported by evidence.

Pirates were then fined an additional R86 000 for failing to provide proper accreditations for the Congolese visitors.

The match itself ended in heartbreak for Pirates, who were eliminated after a tense penalty shootout.

A supporter outside the stadium said, “The whole game felt chaotic. This fine shows CAF was watching everything.”

Official Response

CAF ruled that Pirates will not be reinstated, despite their complaint about Lupopo coach Guy Bukasa and two players — Henoc Molia and Khashala Wanet.

Pirates argued Bukasa should not have been on the bench due to a CAF suspension from the U20 AFCON. They also challenged player registration timelines and questioned documentation linked to Wanet.

However, CAF dismissed the appeal and confirmed that standings would remain unchanged. The disciplinary committee also issued a two-match ban to Lupopo’s Dieumerci Mukoko Amale for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
