A wave of grief has swept through Ngwetsheni village in KwaBhaca after a violent storm claimed the lives of two men .
The tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, 5 April 2026, when a severe storm hit the area with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunder. According to local authorities, the two victims, aged between 29 and 35, were inside a Volkswagen Polo when powerful winds lifted the vehicle and threw it against a wall, killing them instantly.
Leaders from the Umzimvubu Local Municipality and Alfred Nzo District Municipality visited the affected area to assess the damage and offer support to grieving families. The delegation was led by Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Zukiswa Ndevu, alongside Community Development Services Member of the Mayoral Committee, Councillor Eunice Diko and other officials, as well as traditional leadership.
Speaking during the visit, Mayor Ndevu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and called for unity during the difficult period. She emphasised the growing threat of unpredictable weather patterns and the need for communities to remain vigilant.

“We are here to stand in solidarity with the affected families during this difficult time,” she said. “It is important that we work together to restore normality and ensure urgent assistance reaches those in need.”
Traditional leader Inkosi Nosizwe also acknowledged the quick response from local government, urging continued cooperation to help rebuild the community.
Emergency teams remain on the ground in Ward 14, conducting assessments to determine the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts. Authorities confirmed that several households were affected, while damaged electricity infrastructure has disrupted power supply in parts of the area.
In addition to physical assistance, psychosocial support services have been activated to help families cope with the trauma. Officials have also visited injured residents receiving treatment in hospital.
Councillor Diko urged residents to take extra precautions during severe weather conditions, warning that such storms can escalate rapidly and pose serious risks to life and property.
