South Africa’s national football team started their AFCON 2025 campaign on a high with a victory over Angola. The match took place in Morocco on Monday night.

    What Happened

Bafana Bafana secured a win in their opening Group B fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The match, played in Morocco, was led by head coach Hugo Broos, with South African football legend Helman Mkhalele as assistant coach.

The government released an official statement on Tuesday congratulating the team, praising their “thrilling performance” and highlighting their discipline, professionalism and fighting spirit.

    Official Response

According to the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the victory “sets a positive tone for South Africa’s AFCON campaign.” They commended both the technical team and the players, as well as local and international supporters.

“The match showcased the growing competitiveness of African football and highlighted Bafana Bafana’s determination to compete with confidence and purpose,” the statement read.

    Community Impact

The national support behind Bafana Bafana continues to grow as the team prepares for their next Group B matches. The government has called on all South Africans to rally behind the team for the remainder of the tournament, which ends on 18 January 2026.
