In a landmark achievement for South African football, the national under-20 team, known as Amajita, claimed their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title by defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final held in Cairo on May 18, 2025.

The decisive goal came in the 66th minute when forward Tylon Smith capitalized on a well-placed cross from Neo Rapoo, heading the ball past the Moroccan goalkeeper. This victory not only marks Amajita’s inaugural U20 AFCON championship but also avenges their 1997 final loss to Morocco.

Under the guidance of coach Raymond Mdaka, the team showcased resilience and tactical prowess throughout the tournament, culminating in this historic win. The triumph also secures Amajita’s qualification for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup.

This victory is a testament to the growth and potential of South African youth football, promising a bright future for the nation’s soccer endeavors.
