Many South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries experience payment delays each month because of incorrect, outdated or unverified banking details.

SASSA has urged beneficiaries receiving the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant to ensure that their banking information is accurate and linked to an active account in their own name. Incorrect details can result in payments being delayed, returned by the bank or placed on hold for verification.

Who Can Update Banking Details Online?

Beneficiaries receiving the SRD R370 grant can update their banking details online through SASSA’s official SRD portal without visiting a local office. The process is designed to protect beneficiaries against fraud and identity theft.

Step-by-Step: How to Change Your Banking Details

  1. Visit the official SASSA banking details update page:
    SASSA Banking Details Update Portal
  2. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number.
  3. SASSA will send a secure SMS and One-Time Pin (OTP) to the cellphone number used during your application.
  4. Enter the OTP and complete the verification process.
  5. Select your preferred bank and enter your new banking details carefully.
  6. Submit the changes and wait for confirmation from SASSA.

Important Rules Beneficiaries Must Know

SASSA will only pay grants into a bank account that belongs to the beneficiary. Payments cannot be made into the account of a friend, family member or third party. Any mismatch between the account holder’s name and the applicant’s ID number may result in payments being suspended or rejected.

How Long Does It Take?

Banking detail updates are not immediate. Beneficiaries are advised to make changes well before their next payment date as verification and processing can take several working days. Payments already scheduled may still be sent to the previous banking account if the update is submitted too late.

What If Your Phone Number Has Changed?

If you no longer have access to the cellphone number used when applying for the grant, you must first update your registered mobile number through SASSA’s official mobile number update process before changing your banking details.

African Bank Answers Common Questions

According to information provided by African Bank, beneficiaries who need to change contact information or banking details must do so through SASSA’s official channels. Banks cannot update SASSA grant records on behalf of beneficiaries.

Beware of Scams

SASSA does not charge any fee to update banking details. Beneficiaries should avoid sharing OTPs, PINs or personal information with anyone claiming to assist with grant payments. Only use official SASSA websites and communication channels.

Grant recipients who have recently changed banks, closed accounts or are experiencing payment problems are encouraged to verify their details as soon as possible to avoid disruptions to future grant payments.
