The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality led a Ward 01 safety campaign on 27 November 2025, bringing government departments and residents together to promote safe behaviour, clean living, and public health. The event took place at the Youth Hall, where community members received guidance ahead of the festive season.
What Happened
The programme opened with Acting Mayor Mfumaneko Nelson Njomi, who thanked residents and spoke about the importance of safety and health.
“As a municipality, we are committed to protecting and improving the wellbeing of our people. As we head into the festive season, we urge everyone to follow road rules, avoid drinking and driving, and travel responsibly. Safety starts with all of us arrive alive,” he said.
Traditional healers led a prayer for protection, focusing on challenges affecting households across the ward.
In addition, a strong partnership between government departments strengthened the programme. Departments included Disaster Management, Health, Social Development and local leaders.
Community Guidance and Key Messages
Disaster Management Officer Pumzile Nyangana emphasised the need for fast and direct reporting during emergencies.
“It is important for the community to inform Ward Committees, Councillors or Traditional Leaders when a problem or disaster occurs so that help can reach them in time. Quick communication saves lives,” she said.
Residents actively participated, raising issues and suggesting improvements in local services. The campaign also encouraged good hygiene as part of ongoing public-health efforts.
Community Impact
The event strengthened cooperation between the municipality and residents. Many residents welcomed the direct access to information and saw the campaign as a sign of readiness for the festive season.
The awareness drive ended with a strong message of unity, responsibility and community protection.
