The Alfred Nzo District Municipality, with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, held a major District World AIDS Day event at AFM Church Hall in Ward 16 on 28 November 2025. Residents received essential health and social services, while leaders called for unity against HIV, GBV, and substance abuse.
Services Bring Hope to Ward 16
The programme drew hundreds of residents. They welcomed the chance to access services usually found far from their homes. SASSA, Home Affairs, the Department of Health, Thuthuzela Care Centre, Agriculture, and community groups worked together to support the community.
Officials explained treatment options that help people living with HIV stay healthy. In addition, health workers shared updates on medication that reduces clinic visits, making treatment easier to manage for families.
The hall filled with activity. Children played outside while parents and elders received information, screened for services, and collected support materials. The atmosphere mixed joy, gratitude, and relief.
Leaders Call for Unity and Wellness
Ward 16 residents listened as local leaders emphasised collective action.
Councillor Nikiwe Madikizela, representing the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality, encouraged families to stand together against GBV, drug abuse, and alcohol misuse.
“When a community works as one, it builds a safe and healthy home,” she said. Her message received loud support from residents who want stronger, safer neighbourhoods.
Meanwhile, health workers reminded young people about prevention, testing, and treatment. They stressed that early testing remains key to staying healthy.
Community Impact
Many residents said the event made it easier to access services they usually travel long distances for.
As a result, the day strengthened trust between the municipality and the community. It also renewed confidence in public health programmes as the district prepares for year-end outreach campaigns.
