As South Africa celebrate Women’s Month this August, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is celebrating the vital contribution of women in law enforcement. This national tribute also commemorates the historic 1956 march of over 20,000 women to the Union Buildings to protest oppressive pass laws.
Women’s Month is a time to reflect not only on the strides made by women but also the ongoing challenges they face, such as gender-based violence, pay inequality, limited access to education, and workplace harassment.
This year, SAPS is shining a spotlight on two key figures in its leadership: Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, and Lieutenant General Liziwe Senthumele, Acting Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection. Both officers exemplify the strength and capability of women serving at the highest levels of the organisation.
Their leadership comes at a time when issues affecting women in South Africa remain urgent. SAPS says it remains committed to advancing gender equality and supporting the empowerment of women in all ranks.
