What Happened

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) confirmed the blasting will occur 10.9km from KwaBhaca, heading towards EmaXesibeni. The closure is expected to begin at 12pm and last no longer than 30 minutes.

This planned disruption forms part of ongoing roadwork and safety upgrades along the busy N2 route.

Official Response

“Motorists are asked to plan their trips, accordingly, consider alternative routes and to use caution,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL’s Eastern Cape provincial head.

He added that SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and encourages travellers to avoid the blast zone during the scheduled time.

Community Impact

The closure will affect drivers between Mthatha and Kokstad, especially those with tight schedules or delivery routes. Travellers should prepare for added delays if using the suggested detour.

Recommended Alternative Routes:

  • From Kokstad to Mthatha: Take the R56 to Matatiele via Tlokoeng, then the R396 to Tsolo and reconnect with the N2.
  • From Mthatha to Kokstad: Same route in reverse, or via Flagstaff, Lusikisiki and Port St Johns via the R61.
