A 34-year-old man from Bhukuqweni locality in KwaNyathi A/A was arrested after police recovered two unlicensed firearms during a search operation in Alfred Nzo District.
The arrest follows a Tactical Response Teams operation conducted on 26 and 27 February 2026 in parts of the Eastern Cape.
What happened
According to police, Tactical Response Teams deployed in the Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi districts, together with a Reece team, executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence.
The operation took place on Thursday, 26 February and Friday, 27 February 2026.
During the search, officers recovered:
- An R4 assault rifle with an erased serial number
- Two magazines loaded with a total of 66 live rounds
- A 9mm Norinco pistol with an intact serial number
- Eight live rounds of ammunition
Police confirmed that the suspect failed to provide a valid firearm licence at the scene.
A circulation check further revealed that the 9mm pistol is linked to a theft case registered in Marikana in February 2023.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Why it matters
Unlicensed firearms remain a serious safety risk across the Eastern Cape.
When weapons circulate illegally, they increase the likelihood of violent crime and undermine community safety efforts.
Police operations targeting illegal firearms are aimed at reducing gun-related incidents and disrupting criminal networks.
For residents in Alfred Nzo District, such arrests may form part of broader crime prevention efforts currently underway.
