Municipal leaders visited grieving families in KwaMaqoma on 18 November 2025 after the drowning of children at Hillside Dam. The tragedy occurred on 17 November 2025, when young residents reportedly slipped into deep water. Local authorities moved quickly to support the affected families.
What Happened?
Children from the Hillside location drowned at a section of the dam known for deep, unsafe water levels.
Emergency teams responded, but the incident claimed young lives before help could arrive.
A delegation from Raymond Mhlaba Municipality (RMM) and Amathole District Municipality (ADM) traveled to KwaMaqoma. The visit was led by Acting RMM Mayor Councilor Elton Bantam, Acting ADM Mayor Councilor Nomonde Geza, and RMM Speaker Councilor Thozama Ngaye.
A community elder who witnessed the municipal arrival said,
“Our hearts are broken, but the visit shows that we are not alone during this pain.”
Official Response
The leaders met each family privately and expressed condolences.
They also assured parents that municipal departments would provide immediate support.
Acting Mayor Bantam told residents the municipality would:
“walk with the families through this period of
loss.”
Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Geza emphasized the need for improved safety awareness around dams and rural water points.
Municipal officials are assessing the site to recommend further safety measures.
Community Impact
The tragedy has shaken the KwaMaqoma community.
Parents are calling for visible warning signs, regular patrols, and stronger child-safety campaigns.
Local teachers say many pupils are struggling to cope.
In addition, community leaders have asked residents to support bereaved families with meals and counselling during the mourning period.
