The 5th Annual National GBV Shelter Indaba took place at Birchwood Hotel on 13 November 2025. The event ran under the theme “Sheltering & Beyond: Building Bridges of Prevention & Intervention.”
What Happened
The final day of the three-day gathering was under way. Delegates discussed the future of South Africa’s GBV shelter network. They focused on stronger partnerships, improved compliance, and better capacity across the sector.
Stakeholders emphasized the importance of a coordinated national response to gender-based violence. They also stressed the need for shelters to offer holistic support that includes prevention, empowerment, and long-term safety. Officials said the sector must move beyond temporary accommodation and build stronger systems of care.
Community Impact
The Indaba closes with a renewed commitment to survivor-centred services. Delegates reaffirmed that every survivor deserves safety, dignity, and empowerment, both inside and beyond shelter walls. The outcomes from today’s discussions will guide future programmes and strengthen the national fight against GBV.
