Teachers across the Eastern Cape have a limited window to apply to become matric exam markers for the 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams — and missing key steps could get your application rejected.
According to the Department of Education’s official instruction , the online system opened on 30 March 2026 and will close on 17 April 2026 at 16:00. No late applications will be accepted.
This process matters for educators in rural districts like Bizana, Lusikisiki and Flagstaff, where marking opportunities can provide additional income and professional experience. But strict rules apply — and incomplete or incorrect applications will be disqualified.
Who can apply
You can apply if:

- You have at least 2 years’ experience (2021–2025) in that subject
- You hold a relevant three-year post-school qualification
- You have a valid SACE certificate
- Your subject performance meets district requirements
If your qualification does not clearly show your subject specialisation, you must attach official transcripts.
Who cannot apply
You will be disqualified if:
- You did not teach Grade 12 between 2021–2025
- You are currently suspended, dismissed, or under sanction
- You submit incomplete or false information
- You are already in certain office-based roles not directly involved in teaching
The department warns that fraudulent or inaccurate information can lead to disqualification and disciplinary action .

Why this matters locally
In the Eastern Cape, especially in under-resourced rural schools, marking opportunities are not just about income — they help teachers gain experience, improve subject knowledge, and strengthen teaching quality back in classrooms.
But power cuts, connectivity issues, and last-minute rushes have previously affected applications. The department warns teachers to apply early to avoid system delays or outages .
Where to get help
- Contact your school principal or circuit manager
- Reach out to your district office
- Use the department’s support contacts listed in the application guide
If you are unsure about your eligibility or documents, get assistance before submitting.
What to watch out for
- Do not wait until the last day
- Double-check all uploaded documents
- Ensure your subject matches your qualifications
- Avoid errors — incorrect info leads to disqualification
This has not been confirmed: Whether extensions will be granted if the system crashes or if applicants miss the deadline.
We will update this story as more information becomes available from the Department of Education.
