The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has opened a nationwide call for young people to propose a Youth Theme for 2026, with submissions closing on 17 April 2026.
The call, published on the agency’s official social media platforms, invites South Africans aged between 18 and 35 to submit “bold and inspiring” theme ideas as the country prepares to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 youth uprising.
According to the NYDA, the selected theme will shape national youth month activities and messaging in 2026, described as “The Year of the Youth.” Submissions must include a suggested theme and a clear rationale explaining its meaning and relevance.
Entries are being accepted via email at [email protected]. The agency has not confirmed how many submissions will be shortlisted or how the final theme will be selected.
No further details have been provided on prizes, recognition, or whether contributors will be publicly credited. This has not been confirmed.
The announcement comes as government institutions begin early planning for the 50-year commemoration of June 16, a milestone expected to carry significant political and social attention across the country.
For young people in the Eastern Cape—particularly in areas like Bizana, Lusikisiki and Flagstaff—the call presents a rare opportunity to influence national messaging around youth issues such as unemployment, education access and rural development.
Many rural voices are often underrepresented in national campaigns. This process could allow local experiences to shape how youth struggles and achievements are framed in 2026.
However, public response on social media shows some frustration. At least one commenter claimed they had previously submitted proposals to the NYDA without feedback. These claims have not been independently verified.
The NYDA has not yet issued a formal media statement beyond the public call.
Young people interested in participating are encouraged to submit before the deadline and ensure their proposals clearly explain the meaning and impact of their suggested theme.
With the deadline days away, the process now shifts to whether rural and township youth will actively take part—and whether their voices will be reflected in the final decision.
We will update this story if the NYDA releases further details on selection criteria, recognition, or shortlisted themes.
