A senior Eastern Cape government official died in a head-on collision on the N2 near Nciba on 23 November 2025. The crash happened at around 15:20 and brought traffic to a standstill as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
What Happened
According to authorities, the government vehicle was travelling from East London towards Butterworth when it collided with a Toyota double-cab heading in the opposite direction. The Toyota was carrying four occupants believed to be family members travelling from Butterworth towards East London.
Six people sustained injuries in the impact. The province has been left shaken by the crash, especially since the department had earlier praised motorists for a safety with no major incidents reported. Officials said the tragedy felt like a painful setback to the progress that had been celebrated.
The crash scene remains active. A stop-and-go system is in place to control traffic as emergency workers clear the wreckage and law enforcement gathers evidence.
Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide will be opened at Kei Bridge SAPS. Charges of reckless and negligent driving will also be investigated.
Official Response
The department expressed deep sadness following the loss of its official. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of our colleague,” the statement read.
Officials also wished all injured victims a full and speedy recovery.
Community Impact
The crash has sparked renewed calls for vigilance on the busy N2 corridor, especially with holiday travel increasing. Road safety activists say the province cannot afford further loss of life and must push harder for responsible driving, stronger enforcement, and safer behaviour on major routes.
