The Amathole District office of the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) hosted a vibrant Hip Hop Festival at the Ngqushwa Art Centre. The event brought together young performers, established artists, and community audiences. It forms part of DSRAC’s broader plan to uplift the Hip Hop genre and grow the local creative industry.
What Happened
Artists from across the district gathered to showcase music, dance, and spoken word. The festival offered performers the opportunity to present their work on a formal stage, build their profiles, and connect with new audiences. Organisers said the festival aims to encourage creativity, inspire youth, and show the strength of local artistic talent.
Official Response
DSRAC officials said the festival demonstrates the department’s commitment to expanding cultural programmes and supporting young creatives. “We want to see our artists thrive. Platforms like this help them grow their skills and confidence,” an official noted.
They added that Hip Hop continues to be an important form of youth expression and community storytelling.
Community Impact
Local artists welcomed the event, saying it gives them visibility and boosts the district’s creative economy. Community members also praised the festival for encouraging young people to use their talents positively.
