Speaking for SAPS, Colonel Donald Mdhluli revealed that the fourth suspect fled the scene. However, authorities are certain that he sustained injuries during the confrontation and have activated a 72-hour plan to locate him.

SAPS urges members of the public, particularly those working in hospitals and other medical facilities, to remain vigilant and report any individuals who show up with gunshot wounds or injuries.

Colonel Mdhluli stated that SAPS members followed a lead that led them to four suspects in Kwagga A, Kwaggafontein. According to Mdhluli, the suspects were involved in major criminal activities such as extortion, attempted murder, and other related offences.

“During this operation, upon spotting the police, the suspects opened fire on our officers. In accordance with their training and the principle of self-defence, our police officers returned fire. In the ensuing shootout, one suspect was fatally wounded, while two others sustained injuries and were arrested,” Mdhluli said.

“None of the SAPS members sustained any injuries during the incident,” he added.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has issued a stern warning to those who are intending to commit crimes in the province. He further urged the community to work with authorities by reporting criminal activities and any information that could assist with investigations.

“We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation, and we will vigorously pursue those who threaten the well-being of our citizens. We encourage community members to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect on the run,” said the General.
