The funeral service of Sibusiso “Aserie” Ndlovu, a promising journalist whose life was cut short in a brutal shooting, is being held today (Saturday) in his hometown of Kwamhlanga, Mpumalanga. The 30-year-old journalist was shot and killed earlier in June, sending shockwaves through the local media industry and his community.

Ndlovu worked as a freelance journalist and content producer for several outlets and was celebrated for his commitment to youth-driven stories and social justice. His death has raised ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists in South Africa, particularly those working independently or investigating sensitive topics.

Family, friends, and colleagues gathered this morning to pay their final respects at the Kwamhlanga Community Hall, where emotions ran high during tributes to a life described as “bold, kind, and purpose-driven.”

In a statement, his family described him as “a courageous and passionate storyteller who gave voice to the voiceless.” They have called for justice, urging authorities to prioritize the investigation into his murder. Police are still searching for the suspects, and no arrests have been made.

Ndlovu’s passing follows a disturbing rise in attacks on journalists, prompting renewed calls from civil society and media organisations for greater protection and policy reform. The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) and several press freedom groups have condemned the killing, urging law enforcement to act swiftly.

“This is a huge loss,” said one of his former editors. “Aserie was more than just a reporter — he was a mentor, a community builder, and someone who believed that journalism could make society better.”
