Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola have reached an agreement to hand over 121 dockets linked to political killings to the Madlanga Commission. The decision follows a meeting between the two leaders on Monday.
Mixed Reactions to Commissioner’s Move
The National Commissioner’s earlier decision to return the dockets to KwaZulu-Natal sparked debate, with Cachalia criticising the move. Political parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, have since expressed their disapproval of Cachalia’s intervention.
SAPS Backs Commission’s Work
In a statement, the Ministry of Police confirmed that SAPS will fully support the Madlanga Commission. Cachalia and Masemola also recognised the need to strengthen the police’s capacity to investigate the killings of councillors, public officials, whistle-blowers, and professionals who play key roles in tackling corruption and organised crime.
