Matatiele, Eastern Cape – In light of the escalating cases of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in the region, the Matatiele Local Municipality, in partnership with the South African Council of Churches (SACC), will host a Prayer Day on Friday, 11 April 2025, 09:00 AM, at the Matatiele Town Hall.

Prompted by community distress over recent GBV incidents, especially those involving schoolchildren, the event aims to bring together multiple faith denominations, community members, civil society organisations, and local leaders for a collective call for healing and social transformation.

According to the SACC, the event seeks to respond to growing social challenges such as substance abuse, cross-border crime, and the killing of women, which have increasingly destabilized the community.

“The multi-denominational Prayer Day is an important tool in addressing these social ills, fostering compassion and unity,” said Acting Mayor Thembeka Dyantyi, who has endorsed the initiative.

The event is designed to foster empathy, solidarity, and community resilience through faith-based reflection, and will include a town-wide prayer walk with multiple stops, symbolizing the community’s unified stand against violence and despair.

Organizers believe that bringing the community together in prayer is a vital complement to government and civil society interventions. The day is also expected to catalyse ongoing conversations around community safety, moral regeneration, and youth protection.

Members of the media are invited to cover the event and participate in the walk, which is anticipated to be attended by various stakeholders from across Matatiele and neighbouring areas.
