
The Mthatha Regional Court has sentenced a 25-year-old man to 30 years in prison for carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The ruling was handed down following a July 2024 incident in Chartham Street, Mthatha, where a VW Polo was hijacked.
What Happened?
The suspect hijacked a VW Polo in July 2024 before fleeing into Mthatha CBD, where the stolen vehicle was later recovered. Police arrested the suspect soon after the incident, and he remained behind bars throughout the trial after his bail attempt failed.
The court sentenced him to 15 years for carjacking and another 15 years for firearm possession, declaring him unfit to own a firearm in the future.

Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed the outcome, noting the seriousness of both charges. OR Tambo District Police Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, welcomed the sentence.
“I commend all the police officials who successfully worked together to ensure that the perpetrator was brought to book. Justice has finally been served,” said Modishana.
