The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in Alfred Nzo District, in collaboration with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), recently hosted a successful Public Education Programme at the Nophoyi Thusong Service Centre in KwaBhaca.
The campaign was part of SASSA’s nationwide initiative encouraging social grant beneficiaries to migrate from the old SASSA gold cards to the new Postbank black cards. The event also offered much-needed services on wheels, assisting community members with R370 social relief grant verification and applications.
The program was supported by several partner institutions including the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Umzimvubu Local Municipality, the Department of Social Development, and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). These stakeholders played a vital role in ensuring the event addressed not only social grant needs but also broader civic education.
IEC representatives used the platform to help attendees check their voter registration status, update voting station preferences, and register ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections—placing a strong focus on young, first-time voters.
According to Ndyebo Kopo, GCIS Regional Communications Coordinator for the Alfred Nzo District, the session forms part of ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between government services and the public.
“The primary goal was to ensure that communities are informed and supported in accessing critical services like social grants and civic participation,” Kopo said.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to accessibility, transparency, and inclusivity in public service delivery.
