The Constitutional Court says judgment in the Economic Freedom Fighters’ Phala Phala case is at an advanced stage and expected within a month.

This is contained in a formal letter dated 8 April 2026 from the Constitutional Court to EFF leader Julius Malema, acknowledging correspondence from the party and confirming progress in case CCT 35/24.

The letter, signed by Chief Registrar Simonné Laniqué Tjamela, states that the court has received the EFF’s earlier communication dated 25 March 2026 and that preparation of the judgment is now nearing completion.

The case relates to the EFF’s bid to revive the Phala Phala matter, which was heard by the Constitutional Court after the party challenged Parliament’s December 2022 decision not to adopt the Section 89 panel report. That report found that President Cyril Ramaphosa may have a case to answer.

The broader issue stems from a February 2020 burglary at the President’s Limpopo farm, where foreign currency was allegedly stolen.

The Economic Freedom Fighters publicly shared the court’s response, saying it follows their repeated calls for accountability and concerns about delays in the matter.

The Constitutional Court itself has not issued a public statement beyond the letter confirming the timeline.

Details of the final judgment, including the court’s findings or potential legal consequences, have not been confirmed.

For communities in the Eastern Cape, the outcome could shape national political accountability and influence public trust in institutions ahead of future elections. The case has been closely followed across the country, including in rural areas where issues of governance and accountability directly affect service delivery.
