In an effort to fight stock theft related crimes in the OR Tambo District, Police are relentlessly following any leads that can result in the recovery of stolen stock and to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. On Monday 29 January 2024 at about 16:30, Police received information from the community about a truck loaded with suspected stolen cattle heading towards Mthatha.

Members attached to the District Task Team swiftly operationalised the information and proceeded to the identified location where a truck loaded with 22 cattle was stopped on the N2 Ngqwala extension – near Vidgesville outside Mthatha. Whilst documents were being verified, the owner, who was following the truck, immediately arrived and positively identified his own cattle which were reported stolen at Mount Frere. Through further investigation Police summoned the alleged owner to Mthatha Central Police Station where on her arrival Police searched her vehicle (Isuzu Bakkie) and a calf was found lying behind the front passenger’s seat.

Two male suspects, aged 26 and 37, both from Mt Frere were arrested, including the 53-year-old female all charged for possession of suspected stolen livestock. The trio is due to appear at Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon.
