A group of promising young footballers from the Eastern Cape is stepping onto a bigger stage this week, as they travel to Durban for trials with top-flight teams competing in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The players, identified from local teams across the Umzimvubu Local Municipality, were scouted during a competitive tournament held in Ngxabaxha Village, Ward 20, in November 2025. The tournament, which brought together several community teams, served as more than just a sporting event, it became a gateway for rural talent to be recognised and nurtured.

Through a partnership between the municipality and the Tshakumani Foundation, scouts closely assessed players based on their skill, discipline and overall performance. From this process, a select group was chosen and prepared for an opportunity many young athletes in rural areas rarely access professional trials.

The players will now participate in structured assessments with Durban-based clubs, including AmaZulu City FC and Durban City, both of which have opened their doors to evaluate emerging talent. For these young athletes, the trials represent more than just a chance to impress, they offer a potential pathway into professional football and a future beyond the limitations often faced in under-resourced communities.

Speaking on the initiative, Umzimvubu Mayor, Councillor Zukiswa Ndevu said the opportunity is not only life-changing for the selected players but also inspirational for other young people in the region. She emphasised that such exposure encourages youth to stay active in sport and pursue their ambitions with commitment.

Tshakumani Foundation representative Malwande Sicwala outlined the importance of collaboration in making such opportunities possible, noting that partnerships between local government, development organisations and the football community are key to unlocking potential in rural areas.

The municipality has reaffirmed its commitment to backing initiatives that promote youth development and social upliftment through sport, describing the current programme as part of a broader effort to create meaningful opportunities for young people.
