The event marks the culmination of the inaugural Track+Field high schools’ series, which has seen nine qualifying meetings held across all provinces. The tournament has provided hundreds of young athletes from diverse backgrounds and schools — many from underrepresented regions — with a platform to showcase their abilities on a national stage.

The 18 qualifying schools, consisting of the top boys’ and girls’ teams from each province, will now battle it out in Johannesburg, with more than 500 athletes competing for the title of South Africa’s best athletics school.

“This has been a journey of inclusivity and excellence,” said co-founder and Olympic sprinter Mathew Quinn. “We’ve travelled the country, crowned the best schools in each province, and now they’ll all compete on one track. Let’s settle this.”

Key to the success of the series has been its accessibility. Organisers, in partnership with SuperSport, SA Schools Athletics, and Athletics South Africa, ensured no entry fees were charged to athletes or schools — a move widely praised for levelling the playing field and expanding participation.

The grand final will be broadcast live on SuperSport Variety 4, bringing national exposure to South Africa’s rising stars in athletics.
