Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is facing what many would call a “happy headache” as he prepares to finalise his squad, following an impressive run of form by several national team hopefuls.
Speaking after a recent national training camp, Broos expressed delight at the level of competition for places, highlighting that a number of players have shown “bright and promising performances” both locally and abroad.
“It’s not easy anymore to select the final 23. The level of competition is increasing, and that’s exactly what we want,” said Broos.
The Belgian-born coach, who guided Bafana to a commendable showing at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), noted that emerging talent is making the selection process increasingly difficult — a positive sign for the future of South African football.
Among the standout performers in recent weeks are midfielders Thabang Monare and Sphephelo Sithole, along with rising stars in the defensive line. The coach praised their consistency and commitment during recent camps and club matches.
With South Africa set to face key international friendlies in the coming months, Broos hinted at a dynamic mix of youth and experience in his next squad announcement.
The increased depth and improved performances come as SAFA continues its mission to rejuvenate the national team and build a squad capable of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“We are building for the long-term. The good thing is that many players are now fighting for the jersey,” Broos added.
