The Presidency has confirmed that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) probe into alleged academic fraud and maladministration at the University of Fort Hare is still ongoing, with a final report yet to be submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In a formal response dated 30 April 2026, Parliamentary Counsellor to the President, Dr Gerhard Koornhof, acknowledged receipt of a letter from Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema requesting an update on the investigation.
The Presidency states that the SIU investigation is continuing into allegations of “irregularities, maladministration and malpractices” linked to the affairs of the University of Fort Hare. The probe was authorised under Proclamation R84 of 2022 and later expanded in 2024 under Proclamation 194.
According to the letter, once the President refers a matter to the SIU, he does not interfere in its operations. The Presidency says the SIU is expected to conduct its work “without fear, favour or prejudice,” and has urged all parties to cooperate fully while the investigation continues.
The Presidency is currently waiting for the SIU to finalise its work and submit a full report.
Claims circulating on social media that specific senior political figures have already been implicated in the Fort Hare investigation have not been confirmed. The official Presidency response does not name any individuals linked to wrongdoing.
The University of Fort Hare, based in the Eastern Cape, is a major institution with historical and political significance, making the outcome of the investigation particularly important for the province. Allegations of fraud or governance failures at the university could affect public trust, student confidence, and institutional stability in the region.
For readers in the Eastern Cape, the case carries direct local impact. Fort Hare serves students from across rural areas, including parts of Pondoland, and any disruption or reputational damage could affect access to education and opportunities.
What happens next depends on the SIU’s final report, which will determine whether further legal or disciplinary action is taken.
We will update this story as soon as the SIU report is released or if new confirmed details emerge.
