Joburg CBD street collapses after explosion

On Wednesday, news broke that Johannesburg CBD roads had a couple of explosions in different parts of the city that cause one death and had 48 people incapacitated. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi professed that institutions that deal with gas, electricity and water in the City of Johannesburg are called to assist in finding the cause of the explosion.

Pondoland Times contacted a person who is from Bizana but stays in Johannesburg to assess and understand better the situation on the ground, Mfundo Zidlekhaya Daki shared that he hasn’t heard deaths nor injuries from the people he knows from the Pondoland.

It is reported that the Jo’burg Metro Police department closed Lilian Ngoyi street and Johannesburg residence are advised to stay clear of the streets and use alternative routes as Lilian Ngoyi street remains closed.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, the National Taxi Alliance spokesperson Theo Malele describes the impact the JHB CBD explosion has had on the taxi industry. “With these roads not functioning, it’s going to be difficult for us to navigate the city” – Malele says.
