The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned beneficiaries about unlawful deductions made by some insurance and financial service providers for policies that grant recipients did not agree to.

If you notice unexplained deductions from your monthly grant, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to protect your money and your rights.

Step 1: Report It to SASSA

Visit your nearest SASSA local office and lodge a complaint. Take your ID, SASSA card, and proof of the deduction (such as your bank statement, payment slip or SMS notification). Officials will register the case for investigation.

Step 2: Dispute by SMS

Send an SMS to 34548 with your ID number and the name of the insurer/financial service provider making the deduction. This officially disputes the deduction.

Step 3: Cancel with the Provider

Contact the insurance company or service provider directly to cancel the policy. Ask for written confirmation that the policy has been cancelled.

Know Your Rights

  • SASSA does not work with insurance companies or funeral schemes.
  • No deduction can be made from your grant without your consent.
  • Child-related grants (Child Support, Care Dependency, Foster Child) and Temporary Disability Grants may not have funeral deductions.
  • Regulation 29 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 allows only one deduction per month, up to 10% of the grant, and only if you agreed to it.
