In a dramatic conclusion to their 2023 campaign, Orlando Pirates faced a surprising setback at home, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Stellenbosch in a fiercely contested DStv Premiership encounter on Friday night.

The hosts initially seized control, hoping to capitalize on their opponent’s potential rustiness after nearly two weeks without a game. Despite early dominance, Orlando Pirates could only muster a couple of half-chances in the opening minutes, with Evidence Makgopa and Karim Kimvuidi narrowly missing the mark.

Stellenbosch gradually found their rhythm and drew a save from Bucs keeper Melusi Buthelezi through Devin Titus’ powerful long-range effort. Pirates’ Deon Hotto had a promising chance, grazing the upright with his shot, but it was skipper Thabo Moloisane who converted a penalty to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw both teams creating opportunities, with Makgopa doubling Orlando Pirates’ lead before disaster struck. Stellenbosch staged a remarkable comeback, netting three goals in 10 minutes. Iqraam Rayners, Devin Titus, and Andre de Jong turned the game in Stellies’ favor.

Despite late efforts from Orlando Pirates, including a crucial save by Buthelezi and a spectacular stop by Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens, the Soweto Giants couldn’t avoid a second consecutive defeat, conceding a league double to Stellenbosch.

In the end, the spirited clash left fans on the edge of their seats, witnessing an unexpected turn of events as Stellenbosch celebrated their first league victory at the iconic Orlando Stadium.
