The much-anticipated Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi #SportAgainstCrime Tournament attracted young people to the Upper Makhuzeni sports field in Impendle village. Organized and fully sponsored by the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the event aimed to provide recreational opportunities for the youth and deter them from alcohol, drugs, and crime.

“The purpose of this tournament is to create a safe space for our youth, encouraging them to engage in positive activities,” said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi during the prize-giving ceremony. “We invite both public and private sectors to join us in expanding this initiative. It is our duty to nurture and protect our future leaders.”

Wydad FC emerged victorious in the male football category, winning gold medals, a trophy, new soccer kits, and R10,000 in cash. The runners-up, Atlanta FC, received silver medals and R5,000, while teams finishing third and fourth took home R3,000 and R2,000 respectively. The local female soccer team triumphed against the SAPS Midlands team, winning gold medals, a new soccer ball, and R2,000. Netball winners also walked away with R1,000 and new gear.

The tournament not only celebrated sportsmanship but emphasized the importance of community engagement and youth empowerment. “As elders, we have a responsibility to guide our young people, helping them envision a brighter future,” Mkhwanazi concluded, highlighting the community’s role in shaping the next generation.

The success of this inaugural tournament sets a positive precedent for future events, fostering a spirit of unity and hope in Impendle.
