On 28 May 2023, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality hosted a Spaza Shop Fund activation event at the Mbizana Civic Centre, aimed at empowering informal traders and township entrepreneurs with vital funding knowledge.
The session opened with a short prayer from the South African Council of Churches (SACC), followed by welcoming remarks and guest acknowledgments from L. Makholosa, portfolio head for Planning and Development.
Executive Mayor Cllr. V. Mhlelemambana formally welcomed attendees, and Mayor Cllr. D. Mafumbatha extended messages of support and handed out small gifts to guests in attendance.
The Acting Chief Director of the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), Mr. Mhlanganisi Masoga, provided an overview of the Spaza Shop Fund’s objectives, underlining the government’s commitment to supporting township and informal businesses through partnerships with the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and SADIA.
Ms. Siziwe Zulu, Spaza Shop Fund Project Manager, offered a comprehensive, step-by-step explanation of the application process. She detailed the eligibility requirements, the documents needed for registration, and tips for overcoming common challenges during the online process.
The Q&A session brought valuable clarity. Attendees asked:
- Who qualifies for the fund?
- Where can permits be obtained?
- How long does the approval process take?
- Is registration a requirement for all applicants?
A panel from the NEF, SEDFA, and DSBD addressed the questions. They confirmed that the fund is open to all aspiring entrepreneurs, not just those with already registered spaza shops. Business permits can be collected from the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality starting Tuesday through Monday for those beginning the application process.
The event ended on a high note, instilling renewed hope among informal business owners. Many participants expressed eagerness to begin applying immediately, inspired by the opportunity to improve their businesses and livelihoods.
Councillor Z. Mhlwazi closed the event with a vote of thanks and appreciation to all attendees, stakeholders, and community leaders for making the day a success.
