Media Industry Mourns the Loss of Community Media Pioneer, Octavia Hlungwani

The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Octavia Elsie Hlungwani, a veteran publisher and esteemed colleague known for her impactful contributions to community media. Octavia, the publisher of Phofula Golden Highway Voice, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at her home in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, after a brief illness.

Octavia Hlungwani was more than a colleague; she was a fearless community print media activist, a dedicated publisher, and a tireless AIP board member, representing Gauteng. Her sudden passing has left a void in the media industry, and her colleagues remember her as a larger-than-life personality, a whirlwind of energy, purpose, and someone who could get things done.

Mbali Dhlomo, Chairperson of AIP, expressed the shock of losing Sisi Octavia, stating, “In her duties as an AIP board member, Sisi Octavia was in the forefront in our quest for sustainability of the community print media sector. She always went the extra mile and, in most instances, went well beyond expectations.”

Kate Skinner, Executive Director of the AIP, remarked on Octavia’s dynamic personality, describing her as a person who spoke her mind with deep warmth and kindness. Reggy Moalusi, SANEF Executive Director, echoed the sentiment, calling Octavia’s passing “a huge loss” to the media fraternity and acknowledging her significant role in community media in Gauteng.

The Press Council of SA also expressed sadness over Octavia’s sudden departure, acknowledging her substantial contribution to the creation and development of diverse voices in the publishing industry. Latiefa Mobara, Executive Director of the Press Council, extended heartfelt condolences to Octavia’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Gail Schimmel, CEO of the Advertising Regulatory Board, highlighted Octavia’s enthusiastic contribution as a board member and noted her as an involved and thoughtful contributor to the industry.

Survived by her husband, Magezi Mackson Hlungwani, her daughter, Nompumelelo Mkhonza, her son, Nyandayeyo Hlungwani, and her three grandchildren, Sisi Octavia leaves behind a legacy of passion, dedication, and impactful contributions to the community media landscape. The media industry mourns the loss of a pioneer who made a lasting impact on the diverse voices within the publishing sector.
