EASTERN Cape MEC for the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) Nonkqubela Pieters will officially handover beef master bulls and heifers to emerging and communal farmers on Monday morning as part of the ongoing programme to improve the genetic quality of their flock.

This is done as part of the continuous implementation of programmes that seek to commercialize livestock production, alleviate poverty and improve income of those actively involved in the agricultural business in the province.

A total of 16 livestock farming enterprises will benefit from the 122 Beefmaster cattle to be handed by MEC Pieters. The Department continues to provide support and encourage farmers to use suitable breeds to improve the quality of their herd for local and international markets.

In 2023/24 financial year, the Department has allocated R12.8 million to support genetic improvement for communal and smallholder farmers with 250 cattle, 500 sheep and 200 goats.
