27 year-old, Zimkhitha Nqeto who is a self-taught crocheter, makes a living through crocheting. Nqeto was taught to crochet in primary as an extramural activity. She enhanced her knitting skills through Youtube in 2018, which started as a hobby and founded her clothing brand called Khitha Crochets in 2020.
“I knitted my first dress and wore it, and took pictures that I posted on social media. I received a number of heartfelt responses. From there I never looked back.” she said. Nqeto is able to design and create any clothing item desired by an individual.
She specialises in female wear such as dresses, skirts, crop tops and many more items. The Lusikisiki born crocheter currently resides in Soweto Gauteng, her work can be couriered nationwide upon ordering.
Fashion has been a part of me since I was young. I would cut and recreate any clothing item bought for me in order to suit my taste. – said Nqeto
Nqeto utilises the power of social media to market to her target audiences. She is currently working on her own, as her business is still small. She hopes to grow and expand her business in future so that she can be able to create employment for the unemployed.
Nqeto has hopes to run a masterclass in the future that teaches young children how to crochet. She believes that this initiative will help keep children from the streets and bad influences while giving them a lifetime skill.
