Bulelwa ‘Zahara’ Mkutukana’s memorial service took place on the 22nd and 23rd of December at the East London International Convention Centre, marking a somber farewell to the late media icon. Zahara, a South African singer, and songwriter who gained fame in 2011 with her debut album “Loliwe,” passed away in Johannesburg after a brief illness.
During the memorial service, attendees celebrated Zahara’s life and contributions to the music industry. Known for her unique blend of Pop, RnB, and traditional South African music, Zahara’s work garnered praise for its social consciousness and empowering messages for women.
In the days leading up to the memorial service, social media buzzed with discussions surrounding a dispute between Zahara and music producer DJ Sbu over the ownership of her music. Some fans speculated that this conflict contributed to Zahara’s reported struggles with depression and alcohol abuse. DJ Sbu, however, refuted these claims, asserting that he bore no responsibility for Zahara’s challenges.
Celebrities, including Somizi Mhlongo, publicly acknowledged their shortcomings in supporting Zahara during difficult times. Mhlongo expressed regret for not being a better friend, acknowledging his role in perpetuating misconceptions about Zahara’s struggles.
Addressing the preparations for the memorial service, MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture Nonceba Kontsiwe confirmed the readiness of the arrangements. Despite Zahara not being granted an official provincial funeral, Kontsiwe assured that the late icon would receive a proper and dignified send-off befitting her stature.
