On the 18 November, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean MacPherson officially opened the new Tebetebe Bridge in Welakabini. The project forms part of the national Welisizwe rural bridges programme. Residents gathered in large numbers to witness the long-awaited launch.
What Happened
The Tebetebe Bridge was delivered through a partnership between the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure and the South African National Defence Force.
Moreover, the R29-million structure will now serve more than ten surrounding villages. It will help schoolchildren cross safely and make it easier for families to reach nearby clinics and government services.
This investment also forms part of a broader plan to uplift rural infrastructure across the province.
Official Response
Minister MacPherson confirmed that this bridge is one of 48 scheduled for construction in the Eastern Cape during the current financial year.
Local leaders welcomed the development with excitement.
“As Mzimvubu, we are proud and grateful for this investment,” said Municipal Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu. “This bridge will change the daily life of every resident in this area.”
Officials added that communities can expect further improvements as the Welisizwe rollout continues.
