Umzimvubu Local Municipality speaker Happy Ngqasa has been accused of physically abusing Onele Ntsunguzi, a female from Kwa-Bhaca, under Umzimvubu local Municipality.

On a post that is making rounds on social media Onele Phelosihle Ntsunguzi alleges that she was physically abused by Happy Ngqasa in November 2022.

“I was physically abused by the Umzimvubu local municipality speaker and I reported the matter to the Mt Frere SAPS , he was at the police station when I opened the case and he admitted to his actions but police did not arrest him, I guess because they know him and he is in a leadership position’,  – posted Onele.

According to reports Onele had injuries on her breast, underarms and in some other body parts.

The African National Congress released a statement after the news broke, stating that as the party they strongly condemn this act and as such has suspended Ngqasa’s membership immediately, disciplinary measures will follow. Cllr. Ngqasa has been recalled as a Speaker forthwith, and we will be calling for the Council to convene in the next fortnight to elect a new Speaker in Umzimvubu Local Municipality.

“indeed, we are leaving in fear of our lives because of the continuing cases of GBV. I would like to encourage children and women out there to learn to fight for their lives, Yes, it might be difficult but we must learn to fight back. Also, We must stop being too secretive about our whereabout and meet ups, someone must know where you are going and whom you will be meeting up with.” Said Noloyiso Khafu a GBV activist based at Maxesibeni.

The alleged perpetrator Happy Ngqasa refused to comment on the matter.
