A devastating incident occurred on Thursday evening at Matafana Junior Secondary School in Lusikisiki, leaving one 13-year-old boy dead and another with gunshot wounds. A group of seven children had entered the school premises to access the school’s WIFI, when a 62-year-old security guard opened fire on them, allegedly mistaking them for criminals attempting to rob the school.

The security guard, who fled the scene, was arrested later that evening and will face charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, and illegal possession of a firearm in the Lusikisiki Magistrate Court on Monday, May 27.

The community is in shock and mourning the loss of a young life, while also grappling with the severity of the security guard’s actions. The incident raises questions about the use of force and the safety of children in schools.

An investigation is ongoing, and the community awaits justice for the victims and their families.
