Eastern Cape Organised Crime Unit is investigating an extortion case reported by Dalibhunga Senior Secondary School teachers on 26 July 2025.
The case was opened after a threatening note was discovered on the school premises. The note, believed to be from an extortionist group, demanded a monthly payment of R1,000 from each teacher in exchange for so-called “protection.” The incident has raised serious concerns among staff and the wider school community.
Given the organised nature of the threat, the case has been escalated to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, which is now leading the investigation. At this stage, no arrests have been made.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, condemned the threats, stating: “We are treating this matter with the utmost urgency. Extortion of educators is a direct attack on our schools and the safety of our communities.”
Police have urged school staff, learners, and community members to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals or activity. Members of the public can contact the Eastern Cape Provincial Extortion Hotline at 082 387 1561 or call Crime Stop anonymously at 08600 10111.
