Strong winds leave 62 households homeless across OR Tambo District

At least 62 households have been left homeless after strong winds swept across the OR Tambo District, damaging homes and affecting communities in all five local municipalities.

The OR Tambo District Municipality said the severe weather affected 32 wards across Ingquza Hill, King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD), Kumkani Mhlontlo, Nyandeni and Port St Johns municipalities.

According to preliminary reports released by the municipality, a total of 95 households have been impacted by the strong winds. Of these, 62 households were completely displaced after their homes were severely damaged, while another 33 households sustained partial damage.

Families who lost their homes are currently being accommodated by neighbours and relatives as disaster management teams continue conducting assessments and capturing data in affected areas.

Municipal officials warned that the number of affected households could still increase as verification processes continue across the district.

The OR Tambo District Municipality said disaster management teams and relevant stakeholders are working together to coordinate relief efforts and provide support to affected communities.

Residents have been urged to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions, avoid entering damaged structures and report emergencies to local authorities.

The municipality also extended its sympathies to affected families facing difficult conditions following the destructive winds.
