The incident occurred around 17:30 during a targeted operation by police intelligence units. The operation focused on individuals suspected of being involved in extortion activities in the Mthatha cluster. According to police reports, officers intercepted a vehicle believed to be linked to the suspects. Upon stopping, the occupants allegedly exited the vehicle and opened fire to the officers.

In response, the police returned fire in self-defense, leading to the deaths of all six suspects on the scene.

The identities of the deceased remain unknown at this stage. Forensic experts have been deployed and are working to formally identify the individuals. Several firearms were recovered at the scene and will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to any previous crimes.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed and will lead the investigation, as required by law into incidents involving police action resulting in fatalities.

Police have maintained a strong presence in the area while forensic teams continue gathering evidence.
