The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the automatic cancellation of all fraudulent COVID-19 SRD grants, which amount to R370 each. This decision aims to ensure that aid reaches those who genuinely need it.

Beneficiaries whose grants have been canceled are given the opportunity to reapply, ensuring that legitimate claims are processed efficiently. SASSA emphasizes its commitment to integrity, aiming to connect resources with the right individuals and eliminate the misuse of funds.

To further protect themselves, beneficiaries are urged to be vigilant and take control of their personal information. Sharing identity numbers with strangers can inadvertently aid fraudsters, so SASSA encourages everyone to keep their details secure.

Trained SASSA officials are on hand to assist anyone who suspects fraudulent activity related to their grants. If beneficiaries see “referred” when checking their application status, it’s a red flag for potential fraud and they are encouraged to reach out to SASSA immediately.

Additionally, SASSA warns against frequently changing banking details or contact information, as such actions can delay payment processing and complicate grant distribution.

For assistance or to report suspicious activity, beneficiaries can contact SASSA’s toll-free line at 0800 60 10 11 or reach out via WhatsApp at 082 046 8553 during business hours, Monday to Friday.
