Who Must File in 2025?

SARS has confirmed that individuals earning above R500,000 annually, those with multiple income streams, or who received rental, freelance, or investment income, are required to file. However, individuals with a single employer and no additional income may be auto-assessed and not required to take any action unless details need updating.

Key Deadlines:

  • Non-provisional taxpayers (online/eFiling): 21 October 2025
  • Provisional taxpayers: 31 January 2026

Filing Options:

  • SARS eFiling portal: www.sarsefiling.co.za
  • SARS MobiApp (available on Android & iOS)
  • In-person appointments: book online or via 0800 00 7277

What’s New This Year?

  • Enhanced auto-assessment process: notifications were sent via SMS to qualifying taxpayers from 1 July 2025.
  • Improved turnaround for refunds — SARS has promised most legitimate refunds will be processed within 72 hours.
  • Data integration with banks and employers has been expanded to reduce fraud and improve accuracy.

Penalties for Late Filing

SARS has warned that late submissions and non-compliance will result in administrative penalties, even for those with no income or tax due. It has urged the public to check their compliance status on eFiling.

For assistance, taxpayers can contact the SARS Contact Centre at 0800 00 SARS (7277) or visit the nearest SARS mobile unit in the Alfred Nzo District on designated dates.

With growing pressure on public finances, SARS has emphasized the importance of tax compliance in supporting social services and infrastructure. Filing your return on time is not just a legal duty — it’s a contribution to nation-building.
