The South African Government has criticised the recent refugee policy determination made by the United States under President Donald Trump, which sets a ceiling of 7,500 refugees for 2026, focusing on white Afrikaner South Africans. Officials say the policy rests on “factually inaccurate” claims of persecution and disregards South Africa’s constitutional and democratic framework.
What Happened
The US administration announced its 2026 refugee ceiling on Thursday, keeping its refugee admissions system largely closed while designating a small portion for white Afrikaner South Africans. The move has sparked international debate, with South Africa calling the policy “deeply flawed” and inconsistent with global refugee norms.
According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the policy appears to rely on discredited claims of a so-called “white genocide” in South Africa.
“This claim is unsupported by credible evidence,” DIRCO said in a statement. “Prominent Afrikaner leaders themselves have rejected this false narrative, reaffirming their confidence in South Africa’s democracy.”
Officials also noted that the low number of South Africans seeking to take up the offer reflects the stability of the nation’s democratic and legal systems.

DIRCO emphasised that South Africa’s Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to emigrate through lawful means, but warned against conflating voluntary migration with refugee asylum.
“Refugee protection is meant for those fleeing persecution or conflict,” the department said. “Portraying South Africans as refugees distorts international refugee law and undermines legitimate global protection efforts.”
Despite the criticism, Pretoria reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Washington. DIRCO said the two nations would continue engaging on shared priorities through “dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect for sovereignty.”

Public reaction in South Africa has been mixed, with many viewing the US policy as politically motivated and detached from the country’s realities. Civil society leaders praised the government’s firm stance, saying it defends South Africa’s constitutional integrity and social cohesion.
“This is not about race—it’s about truth and national dignity,” said a community activist in Johannesburg. “South Africans don’t need pity; they need fair international partnerships.”
