From 9-11 September 2025, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre, together with multiple emergency partners, staged full-scale road incident simulations in Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Matatiele local municipalities. The exercises tested how quickly and effectively first responders can act during serious road crashes on routes such as the N2 near Bhetshwane in EmaXesibeni, Umzimvubu.
WHAT HAPPENED
The drills formed part of the Road Incident Management System (RIMS) programme and involved the South African Police Service (SAPS), provincial and local traffic officers, Fire and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), forensic teams, the Department of Health, and Routine Road Maintenance (RRM).
Each exercise simulated real-life emergencies, from multi-vehicle pileups to mass casualty scenarios. Responders practiced:
Rapid patient assessment and evacuation, Mass casualty coordination and triage, Emergency evacuation procedures, Life-saving interventions such as CPR, bleeding control, and airway management
The training is especially timely as the district prepares for the summer season, when road crashes typically increase.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Speaking after the drills, a municipal disaster management officer said:
“These exercises are vital. They allow our teams to identify gaps, strengthen communication, and ensure lives can be saved when real emergencies strike.”
Authorities emphasized that such simulations also help improve coordination across agencies, ensuring faster response times on high-risk roads.
