President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended heartfelt condolences to Catholics across South Africa and the world following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, 21 April 2025, at the age of 88. The Holy Father died at his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta, after battling health complications.

In an official statement, President Ramaphosa described the Pope as “a spiritual leader who sought to unite humanity and wished to see a world governed by fundamental human values.” He praised Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to inclusion, equality, and care for marginalised groups, as well as his advocacy for environmental stewardship.

“His extraordinary life story and ascendancy to the Holy See unfolded with humility and a profound commitment to making the Church and the world a better place for all of humanity,” Ramaphosa said.

He added that the Pope’s passing, occurring shortly after Easter, would deepen the global period of prayer and reflection and unite people in remembrance of his legacy.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, was the first Latin American and Jesuit pope. His tenure as the head of the Catholic Church was widely regarded as one of transformation and compassion, addressing issues ranging from climate change to inequality and interfaith dialogue.
