The OR Tambo District’s Police National Intervention Unit (NIU) successfully executed a targeted operation against violent suspects wanted for triple murders. The operation unfolded early in the day when police intercepted a 48-year-old male suspect believed to be armed and dangerous, traveling from Tsolo towards Mthatha.

Police spotted the suspect’s vehicle in Slovo Park and immobilized it. As officers approached, the suspect exited his Mahindra bakkie and opened fire, prompting police to return fire, fatally wounding him. A 9mm pistol with an erased serial number was discovered at the scene, highlighting the suspect’s criminal intent.

Later on the same day, the SAPS Tactical Response Team followed leads on three armed individuals traveling in a Toyota Tazz at Nomadolo locality in Ngqeleni under the Nyandeni Local Municipality precinct. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled on foot, exchanging gunfire with officers. All three male suspects were subsequently shot and killed. Authorities recovered a range of weapons, including a shotgun, two pistols, and multiple cartridges of various calibers, indicating the armed nature of these individuals.

Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, the Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, commended the police for their quick response and tactical awareness in life-threatening situations. He urged would-be suspects to reconsider their actions, stressing that engaging in violence against law enforcement only leads to tragic outcomes. The impounded vehicle from the Ngqeleni incident is set for further investigation as authorities continue to address violent crime in the region.
